Physical Therapy Fitness & Movement

The benefits of exercise, in general, are very well documented: increase in stamina, strength, posture, range of motion, self-esteem, improved treatment tolerance, decrease in pain, sleep problems and fatigue. The benefits of exercise for women with breast cancer are now being reported in medical studies. Not only does exercise decrease a woman’s risk of recurrence, but personalized, in-home exercise programs “successfully increased physical activity and improved fitness and specific aspects of psychological well-being among early stage breast cancer patients. The success of a home-based physical activity intervention has important implications for promoting recovery in this population.” (Journal of Clinical Oncology, Vol 23, No 15 (May 20, 2005), 2005: pp. 3577-3587).

Yoga has benefits akin to other exercise programs, but it also has its own uniqueways of enhancing health. Like more standard forms of exercise yoga strengthens the body and makes it more resilient against disease and injuries. Through the union of breath and postures, yoga strengthens and stretches the muscles, massages internal organs, relaxes nerves and increases blood flow.

T’ai Chi and Qi Gong are two popular ancient, Asian movement practices. The goal of these modalitiesis to invigorate both body and mind and clear the flow of energy surrounding the body. This is done through slow, precise movements and breath integration. The results of these practices are improved muscle strength and coordination, better posture and balance, increased bone density and decreased blood pressure. It can improve sleep and relieve pain. T’ai Chi and Qi Gong are moving meditation activites affording an individual all of the beneftis of meditation practice.

Physical Therapy can relieve pain, strengthen bones, muscles and connective tisssues, increase range of motion, and improve balance and coordination. Physical therapy uses manipulation, mobilization and rehabilitation techniques. This modality works very well in combination with cancer exercise programs also. The benefits gained from this modality, like the others, can positively affect our health and quality of life.
